|
|
Stumbled across this earlier today and found myself practically drooling at the prospect of Furnace.
So questions would be:
1) Is there still space for one more?
2) Having looked over the schedule I'm a little clueless as to pretty much all the rules systems, is that going to be a problem or can someone more familiar with them tell me if I passed checks or not?
Cheers,
Phil |

There are a small number of tickets left - book at http://rpgfurnace.com/registration/.
There's no problem whatsoever if you don't know the rules systems - all the GMs are very friendly and won't bite if you have questions. Most of them will give a quick run through of the rules at the start of the game anyway _________________ Furnace Games Tsar |

I can assure you that's not an issue as long as you're "game". For every game I've run at Furnace (I think its 4 or 5 years now), there's always been (at least a solitary) someone at every single session that hasn't known the rules to the game. Really, not a problem. Normally I give a precis of the rules and then jump into it and you pick it up as you go.
Its a great con - you should try it |

What he said
Don't worry about not knowing the systems used. All you need to bring are some funny shaped-dice, paper and a pen, and a willingness to join in the fun. Furnace was my first con, two years ago, and it is the 'must go to' con for me, every year.
cheers

Even if you don't know the system, don't be intimidated. I've actually broken all the rules there as a GM and run games for the first time (bad Dom!) too. If you sign up for the Sunday am slot then you can experience that fun!
I always pitch the games so they should work for new players. The Savage Worlds: Runepunk last year was somewhat unique and different, and had virtually no one familiar with the setting and several not familiar with engine, but we had a blast! _________________ "We live in a nuclear powered universe. Sounds like my Traveller game at the last Gen Con UK. Held up the Mongoose Traveller rulebook and said "Right, I haven't read this". Held up the scenario and said "And I haven't read this either". I'm sure the players thought I was joking. Of course, I wasn't.
To answer the original question, rules knowledge usually isn't necessary. Just come along and get stuck in.

Speaking for myself, not only am I intending to explain Lacuna's rules before the game, I've actually managed to fit them on the back of the character sheets.
Gotta love weird rules-light indie games. |

Hi all. Just signed up for Furnace - friend bought a bunch of board and RPGs earlier in the week and I've been getting interested in them since getting a wee bit bored with videogames and excited by the prospect of social media stuff like Twitter possibly using RPG concepts like DMs to build games.
Anyway, hello all, and quick question. Looks like me not being much up on the rules isn't going to be a problem but is it just a matter of first come first served as far as getting a place on a table? Love a bit of Cthulhu and the Blondie game in particular sounds awesome, although to be honest there's loads of stuff that looks cool.
Thanks for help in advance. _________________ Twitter at @Tiemachine |

Getting a place on the table is first come, first served. Sign up sheets for the games go up 15 minutes prior to the slot they're running in, and the person with the sharpest elbows and most tenacious spirit gets the first signature _________________ Furnace Games Tsar |

Having been to all of them so far, the technique is to have a look at what you want to play in each slot and be prepared to stand near where the game you are after will be put up. There are multiple boards for the various locations and unless things are changing this year the locations are always on the same board for each slot, so you can work out where you'll need to be to be nearby after slot 1 has been done.
The scrum itself is a bit manic, but I'm yet to see anyone lose an eye to an over enthusiastic pencil swipe and as methods go it's flaws are no worse than you'll find at any other Con and it's merits in advance of quite a few. _________________ I'm not really here, but if you need to contact me I am readily available in other places... |

There are no plans to change anything this year. The scrum is relatively minor but seems to work well enough.
I tend to hang back and sign up lastish, relying on my GM allowed 'advanced booking(s)' for a place in a game that I very particularly want to play. It really helps that the quality of game is so high! _________________ First Age
